Despite decades of advocacy for equal pay, progress to close the gender pay gap has been slow.

A decade ago, full-time, year-round working women earned about 80% of men’s earnings. Today, women earn about 82% of what their male counterparts earn. Year-over-year, the nationwide pay gap for full-time workers decreased by only $96 annually.

The gap is even wider among full-time workers with a bachelor’s degree (70%), according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

In order to gain a better understanding of where gender pay gaps are the largest, we took a closer look at earnings in cities across the country, as well as all 50 states.

Our annual gender pay gap report examined earnings for full-time, year-round workers within the most populated 170 cities in the United States. We also compared year-over-year earnings to determine where pay parity has widened.

Key findings

  • Three cities in the Dallas-Fort Worth area rank within the top 10 cities with the largest gender pay gaps including Plano, Texas (No. 6), McKinney, Texas (No. 5), and Frisco, Texas (No. 1).
  • Last year, the Silicon Valley city of Sunnyvale, California, was home to the largest gender pay gap in the country. This year, the city witnessed the largest pay gap decrease in the nation ($20,942). However, Sunnyvale still ranks 12th nationwide for pay parity, with an earnings difference of $19,642 between men and women.
  • Similar to our 2023 analysis, California cities still dominate the top 10 list of cities with the largest pay gaps, including Irvine (No. 3), Fremont (No. 7), Huntington Beach (No. 8), and San Francisco (No. 9).
  • Cities with the largest year-over-year pay gap increases: Frisco, Texas ($12,357), Yonkers, New York ($10,957), Aurora, Colorado ($10,770), Lancaster, California ($9,759), and Hollywood, Florida ($9,563).
  • In terms of states with the largest pay gaps, New Hampshire ranks No. 1, with an earnings difference of $18,044 between men and women.

Methodology

To determine our ranking, we analyzed median earnings for full-time, year-round workers in the most populated 170 census-defined places via the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey. We also conducted a year-over-year analysis of pay parity within those cities from 2021 to 2022, which is the most recent data available. The same datasets were also analyzed in order to determine the earnings gap in all 50 states.
